PTSS Wheelchair Taxi Perth: A Guide to Taxi Subsidies

For people who regularly rely on wheelchair taxis, transport costs can quickly add up.

Western Australia’s Passenger Transport Subsidy Scheme (PTSS) helps eligible people living with disability access more affordable taxi travel.

If you use a wheelchair taxi in Perth, understanding how PTSS works can help you plan your journeys and make the most of the subsidy available to you.

Here’s what you need to know.

What is ptss?

The Passenger Transport Subsidy Scheme is a Western Australian Government program that subsidises taxi fares for eligible people living with disability who experience difficulty using conventional public transport.

PTSS replaced the former Taxi User Subsidy Scheme (TUSS).

Rather than using paper vouchers, eligible participants use a PTSS card when taking subsidised taxi journeys.

How Much Is the PTSS Wheelchair Taxi Subsidy?

Eligible participants who have been granted the wheelchair subsidy can receive 75% of the taxi fare, up to a maximum subsidy of $35 per journey, when travelling while seated in their wheelchair in a wheelchair accessible taxi.

For example, if an eligible wheelchair taxi journey costs $40, a 75% subsidy would cover $30 and the passenger would pay the remaining $10.

If the fare is high enough that 75% would exceed $35, the maximum PTSS contribution for that journey would be $35 and the passenger would pay the remainder.

Your individual eligibility and subsidy entitlement are determined by PTSS.

Who Is Eligible for PTSS?

PTSS is intended for eligible Western Australian residents who have a disability that significantly affects their ability to use conventional public transport.

Eligibility is assessed by the WA Government and certain residency and disability criteria apply.

There are different subsidy entitlements depending on a participant’s circumstances, so using a wheelchair does not automatically mean someone will receive the wheelchair subsidy.

If you’re unsure whether you’re eligible, check the current PTSS eligibility requirements before applying.

When Can You Use Your Wheelchair Taxi Subsidy?

Wheelchair accessible taxis aren’t only for medical appointments.

Depending on your circumstances, you might use accessible taxi transport to get to work, education, shopping, family visits, social activities, community events, appointments and other everyday destinations.

Having access to subsidised wheelchair taxi travel can make regular journeys more manageable, particularly for passengers who rely on accessible transport frequently.

Can You Use PTSS for Regular Wheelchair Taxi Trips?

If you regularly need wheelchair accessible transport, you can arrange recurring taxi bookings for journeys such as work, education, appointments and community activities.

Your PTSS subsidy is applied to eligible individual taxi journeys according to the scheme’s rules.

Planning regular wheelchair taxi trips ahead can also make it easier to organise your weekly schedule.

PTSS and NDIS Transport Funding Are Different

It’s easy to confuse the two, but PTSS and NDIS transport funding are separate.

PTSS is a Western Australian Government taxi subsidy scheme.

NDIS transport funding is determined according to an eligible participant’s NDIS plan and circumstances.

Being eligible for one doesn’t necessarily mean you’re eligible for the other, and different rules apply.
